Pennies for Patients!

Jamie Meltzer - Thursday, April 07, 2011

Ms. T, our school's guidance counselor, organized an incredible service opportunity for our students through Pennies for Patients.  Introduced during Community Meeting to align with the value of service, students were introduced to the need to help others in need, in this case children with leukemia.  Students rallied behind this important cause and did whatever they could to make sure we exceeded our schoolwide fundraising goal of $300.  In fact, the goal was more than quadrupled!  La Cima Scholars' total donation was $1543.63!

The First Grade Squares' students fundraised the most as a single classroom with $185.94!  Ms. D shares how these students achieved this milestone, "Squares are so excited to find out that we've raised the most money for pennies for patients. I wanted to let you all know just how dedicated the kids were to raising all that money. We had students who set up coffee stands and lemonade stands in their buildings. Scholars who did chores and walked neighbors' dogs. They pulled money out of their piggy banks and of course collected from friends and family members. Grant put in his own birthday money and Jah-Teque said when he was going to put his money in his piggy bank, he remembered all the sick kids that need it too and decided to bring it to school instead. It's amazing what WE can learn about service from our students.  Please make sure to give a square a hi-5 when you see them for being so amazingly awesome."

La Cima in the Blogosphere

Jamie Meltzer - Monday, March 21, 2011

A representative from Insideschools.org visited our school in January and blogged about his observations here.  This will be a great resource for prospective family members and those in our community to learn more about the great things that happen at La Cima each day!

We are also now searchable on Wikipedia!

Stay tuned for many more technological developments in the weeks to come.

Camping in the Classroom!

Jamie Meltzer - Tuesday, February 15, 2011
Our Grade 3 students are climbing the mountain to college six days a week.  As part of our engaging and exciting Saturday Academy curriculum, students learned the skill of sequencing through observing a tent being constructed, completed a graphic organizer to capture their learning and then shared how to construct a tent in a How To book.

Check out our pictures of this exciting learning opportunity to bring us one step closer of climbing the mountain to college and beyond!
